FECAVA Joins Zoetis and FVE in Launching ‘The Human-Animal Bond Handbook’ to Promote Pet-Friendly Policies

FECAVA, in collaboration with Zoetis and the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE), is proud to announce the launch of The Human-Animal Bond Handbook: Best Practices to Advance Global Initiatives and Policies that Benefit Human and Animal Health. This handbook was unveiled at the second Companion Animal Stakeholder Summit in Brussels and serves as a crucial tool for shaping policies that enhance the well-being of both humans and animals.

The handbook provides real-world examples and actionable insights that will guide policymakers, businesses, and veterinary professionals in advancing pet-inclusive societies. By addressing key issues like pet ownership barriers, veterinary care, and One Health initiatives, the handbook aims to promote a holistic approach to companion animal welfare.

Key Themes of the Handbook:

  • Removing Barriers to Pet Ownership: Solutions to housing, travel, and public space policies that make it easier for pets to be part of daily life.
  • Supporting Veterinary Services: Strengthening support for veterinary professionals, improving access to healthcare for pets, and encouraging innovation in the veterinary field.
  • Promoting One Health Initiatives: Advocating for policies that integrate human, animal, and environmental health, and ensuring pets are part of disaster preparedness and public health strategies.

FECAVA’s President, Danny Holmes, highlighted the significance of this initiative: “The conversation around the human-animal bond will form the foundation for future research, guidelines, and regulations. FECAVA is committed to working with multiple stakeholders to ensure veterinary services evolve with the needs of pets and their owners.”

Jeannette Ferran Astorga, EVP of Corporate Affairs at Zoetis, emphasized the powerful impact of the human-animal bond: “Science has proven that the bond between humans and animals is a force for improving well-being. By driving global action to support this bond, we can ensure that both pets and people receive the care and comfort they deserve.”

Nancy de Briyne, Executive Director of FVE, added: “Veterinarians play a critical role in breaking down barriers to veterinary care, and this handbook showcases the solutions that ensure no pet is left behind.”

This collaboration marks an important step toward fostering pet-friendly policies and recognizing the vital role of the human-animal bond in promoting global health and welfare.
